Miller, Betty K. Betty Jo Knight Miller, the daughter of Cecil Edward and Pearl Virginia Morris Knight, was born on an acreage near Port Republic, Virginia in the spring of 1942.
She died of complications related to an auto immune disorder on February 10, 2018, at Butterworth Hospital, Grand Rapids, MI. She was surrounded by her loving family.
After graduating from Montevideo High School in 1960, Betty continued her education at Rockingham Memorial School of Nursing, obtaining her degree as part of the Class of 1963.
She and Gerald "Jerry" Miller were married on June 7, 1964. In their marriage, Betty and Jerry welcomed two children, Tamara Elizabeth and Brandon Arey Miller.
In her career as a Registered Nurse, Betty cared for, comforted, and aided people at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Catawba Sanatorium, Western State, General Leonard Wood Army Hospital, Grace Community Hospital, and Mary Greeley Hospital.
Betty supported her husband while he was enrolled as a graduate student; she assisted him during his tenure as a faculty member and administrator at Iowa State University. She was an active proponent of Jerry's 33-year career in the U.S. Army and the Army National Guard.
Coordinating a Welcome Home concert for veterans of Desert Storm at the Iowa State Fair was a notable contribution of her civilian service.
For her support of soldiers, she received the Department of Army Commander's Award for Public Service in 1991 and The Outstanding Civilian Service Medal in 1995. She also received an honorary Paul Harris Fellow from Rotary International.
As an extraordinary cook, Betty had a passion for creating and improving recipes. She reveled in opening her home to family and friends, making visits special with decor, dinners, and tantalizing treats. Betty never met a stranger; after an initial encounter, an acquaintance would have presented her their life story, only to leave as a lifelong friend.
Children were the delight of Betty's life. She was ecstatic when her family grew once more, making her a grandmother. As a grandmother, Taima, Noah, Miriam, Gavin, and Cora knew where to go for an endless supply of hugs, kisses, laughs, and cuddles. It wouldn't be surprising to maybe find something tasty to eat or a drink nearby either. And, if any child had the audacity to be bored, Betty always had paper and crayons in her purse. There might even be a puzzle, a doll, an action figure, or maybe even a craft project in there!
Even her grand dogs knew who was going to give them something a little extra. Betty excelled at a lot of things, but Mother and Grandmother were her finest accomplishments.
She is survived by her husband Gerald "Jerry" Miller, daughter Tamara (Dr. Houssam Attal) Miller, son Brandon (Erica Dobson) Miller, five grandchildren Tamia Attal, Noah (Asma Baban), Miriam Attal, Gavin Miller and Cora Miller. Brothers Bobby (Elizabeth) Knight, Billy Knight, and Gary Knight and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother. A funeral service will be held 1:00 pm on Friday, February 16 at Zaagman Memorial Chapel (2800 Burton St. SE) with visitation from 11:00 am 1:00 pm prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in memoriam can be made to Betty's favorite church: Grace Memorial Episcopal Church, 7120 Ore Bank Road, Port Republic, VA 24471.
