Conclusion
History of The Iowa National Guard
CW2 David L. Snook
Although the future of the
National Guard is difficult to predict, one thing is certain to remain its dual
mission. The National Guard will continue to augment active duty military forces. It will
also continue to assist with natural disasters and other state emergencies. Debate
continues concerning the relative size of the combat arms and combat service support
components of the National Guard, but the "Total Force" or "One Army"
concept is gaining wider acceptance. The traditions of National Guard service are deeply
embedded in our national life. These traditions are the result of nearly four centuries of
dedicated service by hundreds of thousands of militiamen and Guardsmen from the 1630s to
the present. Our history continues every day
