The National Guard Family Program is a Joint Force initiative that serves as the foundation for support to families of Army and Air National Guard members. As the Guard faces unprecedented increase in military activity and extended deployments, it is more vital than ever to ensure that families are prepared for the stresses of deployment and supported throughout the entire deployment cycle. The Family Program acts as a network that allows families to mutually support one another. By providing families with information, resources, and support, the program strengthens both the unit and service member.
Family is critical to readiness and retention. The National Guard provides assistance to all military families, regardless of branch or component, who find themselves beyond the support capability of active duty military facilities or their home units.
What is Family Readiness?
A Family Readiness Group (FRG) is a volunteer organization of soldiers and civilian employees (single or married) and family members belonging to the unit. A FRG provides an avenue of mutual support and assistance and a network of communication among the family members, the chain of command, and community resources.
What is Family Assistance?
Family Assistance is the contractual or statutory obligation our Armed Forces has with its soldiers/civilian employees/retirees, regardless of marital status, with or without any legal dependent family members. Family Assistance is a command responsibility.
What is Family Support?
Family Support is a training and mutual reinforcement program to promote self-reliance and prepare for periods of separation. Family support relies on the cooperation and networking among soldiers, airmen, and their families (both immediate and extended), and the chain of command. Our National Guard “family” also includes civilian employees, retirees, parents, significant others, and perhaps community members.
