FUNERAL SERVICES SCHEDULED FOR IOWA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD SOLDIER |

Funeral services have been scheduled for Ankeny resident Master Sgt. Scott M. Carney, 37 (note that Carney was posthumously promoted to Master Sergeant). Carney was killed in a vehicle accident during convoy operations, Aug. 24, near Herat, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the Iowa Army National Guard’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division, Boone, Iowa, as an Infantryman. Visitation for Master Sgt. Carney will be held from 3-8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 30, with the family present from 5-8 p.m., at Saint Theresa’s Catholic Church, 1230 Merle Hay Road, Des Moines. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Aug. 31, also at St. Theresa’s. Interment at Highland Memory Gardens, 1 NE 60th St., Des Moines, will immediately follow the funeral service. Carney was born July 14, 1970 in Somerset, Ohio and graduated from Sheridan High School, Thornville, Ohio in 1988, where he was a member of the wrestling team. He attended Upper Iowa University, earning an Associate’s degree in 2003 and also took college courses through the University of Maryland. Carney enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1989, and following Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training, was assigned to the 583rd Medical Company in Germany. He then served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 18th Infantry (Mechanized), at Fort Benning, Ga., before transferring to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 9th Infantry, Korea in August 1995. In August 1996, he served with the 267th Quartermaster Company at Fort Lee, Va., until he left active duty in October 1999. He joined Detachment 1, 3655th Maintenance Company, Iowa Army National Guard (Camp Dodge, Johnston) in December 2000 and was qualified as a supply Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO). He transferred to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team (BCT) in November 2004. He mobilized in February 2007 for Operation Enduring Freedom and the Global War on Terrorism. He will be posthumously awarded the following awards and decorations: Bronze Star and Afghanistan Campaign Medal. Prior to his deployment, Carney served full-time as the Readiness Non-Commissioned Officer for Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd BCT in Boone. Carney is survived by his wife, Jeni L. Carney, and twin sons, Jacob and Justin, of Ankeny. He is also survived by his mother and father, Geneva S. and John K. Carney, of Somerest, Ohio; brothers Craig (Sharon) of Woodbridge, Va., Russell (Holly) and Jason (Jennifer), and sister Lisa Robinson, all of Somerset, Ohio. The family of Master Sgt. Scott Carney asks that memorials and contributions be sent to the Jacob and Justin Carney Educational Fund, at any of the Des Moines-area Bank of America locations. No media coverage will be allowed at the visitation and no interviews will be granted by the Carney family at the funeral or graveside service. Per the Carney family’s wishes, media pool coverage is available for both funerals and graveside services as follows: Video and audio uplink will be provided by WHO TV.
