FUNERAL SERVICES SCHEDULED FOR IOWA SOLDIERS |

Funeral services have been scheduled for Marshalltown native Sgt. 1st Class Scott E. Nisely, 48, and Sgt. Kampha (kum paul) B. Sourivong (SOR eh vong), 20, of Iowa City. Both Soldiers were killed during combat operations near Al Asad, Iraq, on Saturday, Sept. 30, and were members of Company C, 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry, Iowa Army National Guard (note that both Soldiers were posthumously promoted – Nisely to Sgt. 1st Class and Sourivong to Sgt.). Funeral services are scheduled as follows: Sgt. 1st Class Scott Nisely A second visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 11, at United Methodist Church, 560 6th St., in Syracuse, Neb. Interment at Park Hill Cemetery in Syracuse will immediately follow. Nisely was born July 5, 1958, the son of J.C. Nisely and Norma Jean (Gore) Nisely in Nebraska City, Neb. He graduated in 1976 from Syracuse High School, and then graduated from Doane College in Crete, Neb. in 1981. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves in 1977, accepting an officer’s commission in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1981 after graduation from Officer Candidate School. Nisely was honorably discharged in 1993 and returned to the Marine Corps Reserve, where he was promoted to major. He left the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves in 1999, and joined the U.S. Navy Reserves in 2001. Nisely then enlisted as an infantryman in the Iowa Army National Guard’s Company C, 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry in July 2002. He mobilized for Operation Iraqi Freedom with the unit in September 2005 and arrived in Iraq in early May 2006. He previously deployed with the unit as part of the Multi-National Force and Observers mission in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. He will be posthumously awarded the following awards and decorations: Bronze Star (second award), Purple Heart, Iraq Campaign Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Mobilization device (second award), and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Nisely was a 12-year employee with the United States Postal Service, serving in mailrooms in Ames, Des Moines and Marshalltown. He is survived by his wife, Geri; a son, Justin; and daughter, Sarah. The Nisely family has issued the following statement: “Scott was a dedicated and loving husband and father. He was actively involved in his children’s lives. He was a loyal, compassionate and caring friend that everyone liked. He loved and was committed to God, and was very involved in his church and community. He also loved his country and was a volunteer career military servicemember that was proud and honored to serve his country. Kampha Sourivong Sourivong was born March 21, 1986, in Iowa City, the son of Patty and Maliphone (mellee pon) Sourivong. He graduated in 2004 from Iowa City West High School, where he was active in track. He previously attended Iowa City High, before transferring to West. He enlisted as an infantryman in Company C, 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry in February 2004. At the time of his death, he was mobilized for Operation Iraqi Freedom with Company C, 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry in September 2005 and arrived in Iraq in early May 2006. Sourivong with be posthumously awarded the following awards and decorations: Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Mobilization device, Army Good Conduct Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He is survived by his mother and father, Patty K. and Maliphone P. Sourivong, of Iowa City; a sister, Elizabeth; and a brother, Neal Vasey. The Sourivong family has issued the following statement: “Kampha was a very caring person. He had a lot of friends, loved his family, loved his brother and loved his sister. He was also well respected in his neighborhood and the Iowa City community. He was a very polite person. He would give the shirt off his back to someone in need. We will miss him very much and we loved him very dearly. When he died, a part of us went with him. We are very proud of him.”

-Media Information for Visitation and Funeral- Both the Nisely and Sourivong families ask that their privacy and the dignity of their loved ones’ funerals be respected. No media coverage will be allowed at the visitations and no interviews will be granted by the families at any of the funerals or graveside ceremonies. Per the families’ wishes, media pool coverage is available for both funerals and graveside services as follows: Sgt.
