TWO IOWA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD SOLDIERS KILLED
IN IRAQ |

The Iowa National Guard regrets to announce the deaths of Staff Sgt. Scott E. Nisely (NIZE lee), 48, of Marshalltown, and Spc. Kampha (kum paul) B. Sourivong (SOR eh vong), 20, of Iowa City. Both Soldiers were killed during combat operations near Al Asad, Iraq on Saturday, September 30. The attack occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m., local Iraq time. Nisely and Sourivong were part of a forward security element providing convoy security west of Baghdad, when insurgent forces attacked with small arms fire. Both Soldiers were assigned to the Iowa Army National Guard’s Company C, 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry, based in Iowa Falls, Iowa.
Nisely graduated from Syracuse (Nebraska) High School in 1976. He enlisted as an infantryman in Company C, 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry in July 2002. Nisely mobilized for Operation Iraqi Freedom with the unit in September 2005 and arrived in Iraq in early May 2006. He is survived by his wife, Geri; a son, Justin; and daughter, Sarah.
Spc. James Migues, Jr. was injured in the attack and was evacuated by air ambulance to the U.S. Army medical facility in Taqaddum, Iraq. He was later transferred to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, and it is anticipated that he will eventually be transported to Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. for additional medical care. He is survived by his father and mother, Maliphone P. and Patty K. Sourivong, of Iowa City, a sister, and a brother. The Nisely and Sourivong families ask that their privacy be respected at this time. Any media queries are to be handled through the Iowa National Guard Public Affairs Office. Additional information regarding funeral arrangements and visitation will be distributed in the future. Approximately 650 Iowa Army National Guard Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry and Company E, 334th Brigade Support Battalion are members of the 1st Brigade Combat Team. The 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry consists of units located in Waterloo (Headquarters and Headquarters Company, and Detachment 1 of Company B), Dubuque (Companies A and D), Oelwein (Company B), Iowa Falls (Company C), and Charles City (Detachment 1 of Headquarters and Headquarters Company). Company E, 334th Brigade Support Battalion is also based in Waterloo. The core mission of the 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry is to conduct close combat with enemy forces and provide security of key terrain, facilities, and installations. The 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry last deployed in 2003-04 for the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) peacekeeping mission in the Sinai Desert.
