IOWA NATIONAL GUARD SOLDIERS PROVIDING SAFETY, SECURITY IN IOWA CITY
|

|
Approximately 30 Iowa National Guard Soldiers are currently assisting Iowa City and Johnson County law enforcement officials in providing a safe and secure environment for Iowa City residents. The Soldiers were activated late Thursday night following severe storms in the area. With numerous power lines down, leakage from damaged vehicles, severed natural gas lines, debris, rubble and unstable, Soldiers from Iowa City’s 67th Troop Command and 109th Area Support Medical Battalion are providing security and aiding local officials in traffic control. “We are only providing support and augmenting local law enforcement officers. We are providing a general peace officer mission,” said Maj. Mary Parmenter, Defense Support to Civil Authorities, Camp Dodge. Scattered throughout Iowa City, the Soldiers were activated during the evening and early morning hours, while another 30 were expected to replace them this morning. It is estimated they will aid local officials at least through April 15.
