Education Center Programs

The Gold Star Museum encourages people of all age groups and backgrounds to visit our award winning facility. We honor Iowa Veterans of all branches, and serve the public in two unique areas.

  1. The museum offers interpretive exhibits highlighting important events in Iowa military history from the Mexican War in 1846 to the present. Each visit to the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum and Education Center is an educational experience! The Iowa Veterans tour shows important facts about Iowa military veterans.

  2. The Iowa Military Museum and Education Center provides travel trunks to educators throughout the state to use as a supplement to their classes about Lewis & Clark. The travel trunk idea is developed as part of the museum’s mission to commemorate, acknowledge, and affirm the role played by Veterans and America’s military past. Therefore, the focus of this program is learning about history through their experiences. The trunk includes reproduced artifacts that students will be able to experience hands-on. The Lewis and Clark travel trunk contains a complete 1800 Army uniform blouse along with accoutrements such as a haversack and maps, journal, medals, and items they returned with from their journey to the Pacific Ocean. Furthermore, the suggested activities included in the teacher’s manual are based on national curriculum standards. The trunks can be reserved on a one-week basis for a fee of $10. Schools are responsible for pick-up and return. For more information on the Travel Trunk Program, please contact Mike Vogt at (515) 252-4531 or e-mail the Curator at goldstarmuseum@iowa.gov.
