WWI Camp Dodge - Omar N. Bradley

Omar N. Bradley, a modest and humble man, served at Camp Dodge for a short period during World War One, arriving at post on September 25. Later he became a distinguished five-star general , an honor in which only three others had accomplished prior to WWII.

As a young boy Bradley valued education and graduated from West Point. After Bradley was promoted to major he was sent to Camp Dodge in August of 1918, with the 19th Infantry Division. However, Bradley was unable to experience the overseas battlefields because of the influenza epidemic and the armistice in November, which left him frustrated because he considered it a failure not to serve in battle.

Bradley was able to exchange those thoughts for greater ones, as he became a five-star general, army chief of staff and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, commanding many men and women in battle. Incidentally the Bradley Fighting Vehicle was named after him. You are probably able to pick up some of his qualities by the many quotes he spoke during his time in the service:

"Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants. We know more about war than we know about peace, more about killing than we know about living. We have grasped the mystery of the atom and rejected the Sermon on the Mount. " Gen. Omar N. Bradley

"Leadership in the democratic army means firmness, not harshness; understanding, not weakness; justice, not license; humaneness, not intolerance; generosity, not selfishness; pride, not egotism." Gen. Omar N. Bradley
